Cleaning Sails – How Do I Remove Mold and Stains?
Mike Maloney asked:
Any recommendations on cleaning sails such as cleaners and techniques that have worked for you would be appreciated. I have spectra and Kevlar sails that have some stains and mildew.
Answer:
For years, sailors have been reporting excellent results with Boat Clean Plus. It’s an emulsifier type cleaner, so it won’t damage the sail material or stitching.
The procedure is to spray it directly onto the stains, mildew, and spots. Pour the rest of the bottle into a bath tub or 55 gal drum filled with warm water. Submerge the sail and let it soak for about 12 hours. Remove the sail and while it is still wet, scrub it with a soft bristle brush (type you use for car washing). Rinse well with a hose and hang to dry. Your sail should be good as new.
