Since this original post, we have made some advancements and have a much better and easier way to remove rust from stainless steel on your boat and more importantly to prevent the rust from coming back. If stainless steel is allowed to rust, the corrosion will eventually result in pitting and corrosion to the point of mechanical failure. Mechanical failure is the serious side of rusty stainless steel on your boat but in addition the rust is unsightly and the runoff will stain surrounding areas of gelcoat, aluminum and other adjacent substrates.

The two new products that we’ve invented are Quick Silver, stainless steel rust remover and passivator and Stainless Shield, clear coat rust preventer.

The quick and easy way to remove rust from your boat’s stainless steel and at the same time re-passivate and brighten the metal is:

1. Brush Quick Silver onto the rusty stainless steel and allow it to work for 5 to 20 minutes.
2. Rinse clean with fresh water and dry with a microfiber or cotton cloth

For heavily rusted stainless steel, apply Quick Silver and scrub with a brush to loosen the heavy rust.

Repeat if necessary until the stainless steel is clean and bright.

To remove rust stains from fiberglass gelcoat:

1. Brush Quick Silver onto the rusty surface and wait 5 to 20 minutes.
2. Rinse clean with fresh water and dry with a microfiber or cotton cloth
3. Remove any remaining stains with Boat Scrub

To protect the stainless steel on your boat from rusting in future:

1. Wipe 2 thin coats of Stainless Shield on to the clean, dry and passivated stainless steel and allow to dry.

Stainless Shield can protect your stainless steel from rusting for up to 5 years.
