Should I protect my bow rails when applying Canvas Shield?

George Kelchner asked:

I plan on using a small roller to apply the product because it is always windy here in Florida. I will be using Canvas Shield on my mooring cover while installed on my boat. Should I be concerned about it bleeding through on my bow rails?
Any suggestions would be helpful.

It shouldn’t be a problem if you wash the bow rails with Fabri-Klean immediately after applying the Canvas Shield, but this may not be possible and it’s always better to err on the side of safety. So, I suggest that you lift the canvas off the bow rails or protect them with a tarp or plastic that can be removed the next day when the Canvas Shield cures.

The issue might be if the dye in the cover is not 100% stable it could bleed and stain the metal, or if it bleeds through and dries on the metal it could glue the cover to the metal or leave a residue that will require work to get off.

Thanks for your question,
